Laura Terry McLeod Maliawski, 94, formerly of Buie and Lumberton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home in Willingboro, New Jersey, on Oct. 23, 2010.

She was the widow of Master Sgt. Joseph Maliawski, U.S. Army retired, who passed away in 2003, after 60 years of marriage.

My mother's parents were Mary Catherine "Kate" Terry and Alexander Calhoun McLeod of Richmond and Robeson Counties, North Carolina. She was the youngest and last surviving child of 11 children. Her brother and sister were LTC (Retired) Archie Hilburn McLeod Sr and Mary Elizabeth McLeod Harwood of NC. Half-siblings were Bessie Anna McLeod Holderfield of Virginia; Lillie Mae McLeod Britt, Edith Henrietta McLeod Smithey, John Alexander McLeod, James Rufus McLeod Sr, Norman Carroll McLeod and Martha Ventress McLeod Matthews, all of NC; and Leonard Adell McLeod of California.

Mom was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. During her youth, she played piano at the Buie Methodist Church where her father and brothers served as deacons.

The McLeod children grew up on a 44 acre farm in the small farming community of Buie, Robeson County. They attended Philadelphus High School. My mother graduated in 1934 and moved to nearby Lumberton to attend business school. She went to work for the North Carolina Farm Bureau. In 1942, during World War II, she met Joseph Maliawski from Jersey City, New Jersey, who was stationed at Fort Bragg. He was a combat paratrooper with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. They were married on 8 April 1943, shortly before he was deployed to fight in Europe.

After the war, my parents started a family and embarked on military assignments at Fort Bragg NC, Fort Bliss TX, Augsburg Germany, Fort Lewis WA, Fort Campbell KY, and Fort Dix NJ. In 1959, my father retired from the military and we settled permanently in New Jersey. Mom returned to work as a teacher's aide for the Willingboro Board of Education. She retired at age 76 after 20 years.

Mom was happiest when surrounded by family. She enjoyed watching soap operas on TV and wild birds at her outside feeders. She loved crossword puzzles and attending Andre Rieu concerts. Her favorite baseball player was Philadelphia Phillies shortstop, manager and coach Larry Bowa. She was adept at supervising family gardening projects and, despite living the past 52 years in New Jersey, she never lost her sweet Southern accent or her love of North Carolina.

Like my father, Mom passed away quietly at home in the early morning hours of a Sunday on 23 October 2010. We had just celebrated her 94th birthday five days prior. She passed in the exact same spot as my father had ~ 7 years 4 days before. Her son Mac had just given her eye drops. When he returned minutes later, she was gone.

She was survived by a daughter, two sons and a son-in-law.
