She was born September 26, 1913, in Augusta County, a daughter of the late George Wallace Fitzgerald and Edith (Smith) Fitzgerald Lotts.
Prior to retirement, Mrs. VanFossen had been employed by Genesco as a seamstress for 39 years.
She was a member of Linden Heights Baptist Church, AARP, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Staunton Eagles Lodge.
Mrs. VanFossen was preceded in death by her first husband, Ulysses F. Campbell on December 1, 1974. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnne C. Armstrong; a brother, Winford S. Fitzgerald; a sister, Betty Jane Colvin; and her step-father, Finley H. Lotts.
Family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert F. "Bob" and Wanda (Snyder) Campbell and the Reverend Harold W. "Pete" and Ada (Hevener) Campbell, both of Staunton; a brother and sister-in-law, Stuart and Julia (Moran) Fitzgerald of Staunton; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Fitzgerald; eight grandchildren, Dr. Michael Campbell and his wife, Michelle, Dawn Dudley and fiance, Jimmy Robertson, Dwayne Armstrong and his wife, Patty, Tony Campbell and his wife, Sonya, Tracy Campbell and his fiancee, Lisa Cleveland, Dana Burns and her husband, Brock, David Campbell and his wife, Becky, and Chris Campbell and his wife, Tonya; 10 great-grand-children, Stephanie Dawn Dudley, Brandon Michael Dudley, Heather Renea Fitzgerald, Ciara Renee Campbell, Kristen Marie Campbell, Samuel Nathan Armstrong, Morgan Sarah Armstrong, Christopher Todd Cleveland, Riley Ann Campbell and Deacon Crosby Campbell; and three great-great- grand-children, MacKenna Swanson, Jaelynn Vaughn and Karli Dudley; special care giving nieces, Pauline Campbell and husband, Earl, and Helen Littwin; a number of nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Francis Bowen and Stella Baker; and the staff of Shenandoah Nursing Home and Sallie Dameron and AMC Hospice.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, 2009, at Linden Heights Baptist Church by the Reverend David A. Anderson with burial following at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Monday, May 11, 2009.
Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Dr. Michael Campbell, Dwayne Armstrong, Tony Campbell, Tracy Campbell, David Campbell and Chris Campbell.
Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Henry Funeral Home and other times at the homes of her sons, Bob of 429 Betsy Bell Road, Staunton and Pete of 1807 North Drive, Staunton.
