Earl Cowley Jr., 84, passed away at his home in Odessa, Texas

Earl was born on October 13, 1926, in Covington, Texas to Earl and Jewel Cowley. He graduated from Covington High School in May, 1944, and enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. He started out in pilot training and was initially assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Essex. After being shot down once and crashing once, the Navy reassigned him to the battleship USS Alabama. Earl served on the Alabama in the "N" or Navigation Division from mid-1944 until the ship was decommissioned in January 1947 and achieved the rank of Lieutenant, jg. He stayed on reserve duty until 1952 while living in California and Texas.

While in Texas, he married Virginia Weathers on January 27, 1950. They lived in Ballinger and Lamesa, Texas, as well as Hobbs, New Mexico, and finally settled in Odessa. Earl worked in the oilfield for many years as a Toolpusher for Sharp Drilling until retirement. He then embarked on a second career driving 18-wheelers for Caprock and Lonestar Trucking.

Earl was a member of the USS Alabama Crewmen's Association and attended several reunions over the years and was named an honorary admiral. He had a passion for hunting and fishing. He was proud of his oilfield accomplishments. He was involved in the early deep drilling programs in the Fort Stockton area and was the toolpusher on the rig that set the deep drilling record for that time in the late 1960's.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; and his parents.

Earl is survived by his son, Gerry and wife Pam; daughter, Beverly Campbell; and son, Bobby and wife Elaine; his grandchildren, Shannon, Michelle, Ian, Meghan, Chad, Chris and Darrell; as well as numerous great-grandchildren; and his niece, D'Ann.

Open visitation will be held at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home in Odessa on Thursday, October 21, 2010.

Visitation will also be held at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Texas on Friday, October 22, 2010, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Ridgepark Cemetery in Hillsboro, Texas with Nathan Herrod officiating.
