Mildred Kubes, 98, of Crete passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2010 in Crete.

She was born in rural Lancaster Co to Emma and Henry Kattau on March 27, 1912.

Mildred lived nearly all of her life on the family farm southeast of Crete near Kramer. She was one of the descendants of the founder of the town of Kramer. Mildred attended country school near Hallam through the 8th grade but then helped her parents on the farm.

Mildred had a natural musical ear and was trained in piano and played electric organ with great skill. She also enjoyed gardening and loved to care for all kinds of animals. There were no strays around the Kubes farm, since she would immediately take them in and care for them.

She was received into the Grace Episcopal Methodist Church in 1922. She remained a contributing member of Grace Church until the very end of her life.

After her father died in 1937, Mildred helped her mother run the farming operation. She loved the outdoors and was a good marksman with both pistol and rifle. She also loved horseback riding and owned and cared for her own horses. Mildred moved in with her sister Viola and family after their mother died around 1941. Mildred was a child at heart and became a playmate to Viola's daughters, Marlene and Diane.

Mildred was married to Karl Kubes in 1946. They moved back to Mildred's farm, and Mildred helped Karl out in the fields as well as being a great cook and homemaker for him. Mildred entered Tabitha in 1999.

Preceded in death by her husband Karl; sister, Viola Aron.

She is survived by her nieces Marlene (Aron) Pulec, Pacific Palisades, California and Diane (Aron) Luenenberg, Yuba City, California great nieces Marilyn McKeon, Tracy Titus, Wendy Harvey, and great nephew Jeff Luenenberg; great, great niece Leah Titus and great, great nephews Nicholas and Jacob Harvey.

Services were held on Wednesday, August 4 at Kuncl Funeral Home, Crete. Interment: Kramer Community Cemetery. Memorials to Tabitha Hospice in lieu of flowers.
