Jean Huntington Brobeck, of Bedford, Va., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Born in Fitchburg, Mass., in 1930, she graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1948, and graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, with a degree in History in 1952. She later earned a Master's Degree from Boston University.
Mrs. Brobeck's career was devoted to teaching, first in the dependent schools in Baumholder, Germany, where she met her husband of 50 years, Lt. Col. Irvin Brobeck. She also taught in Bangkok, Thailand and in Fairfax County, Va. She retired from teaching in 1985. She was a member of Phi Lamda Theta, the honorary society for women in education and an active member of the American Association of University Women.
Wherever she lived, Mrs. Brobeck participated in multiple civic organizations including the Girl Scouts of America, the PTA, the Lincoln County Historical Association and Friends of the Library in Wiscasset, Maine. She maintained her membership in the Wiscasset Female Charitable Society until the time of her death.
Since moving to Bedford, Va., in 1996, she dedicated herself whole-heartedly to the St. John's Altar Guild, and was a member of the Bedford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and past board member of the Friends of the Bedford Public Library. She also served the Center for Domestic Violence.
In later years, Jean Brobeck was a member of the Smith Mountain Lake Writers Group. She published two chapbooks of poetry. She was a member of the Bedford Women's Book Club.
Mrs. Brobeck is survived by her husband, Irvin Brobeck; her children, Kurt Brobeck, of Nashville, Tenn., Carol Brobeck, of Washington, D.C., and Gretchen Knudson and her husband, Dennis, of Spotsylvania, Va.; and five grandchildren, Emma and Sam Brobeck, of Nashville, Catherine and Daniel Knudson, of Spotsylvania, and Joel Woodruff and granddaughter in law, Danielle Woodruff, of Sterling, Va.; as well as three greatgrandchildren in Sterling, Va., Alyssa, Josh, and Gavin Woodruff.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Bedford. Arrangements by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, Va., 540-586-3443.
