Born on Atlas Street, Black Heath in Greenwich, Kent, England. Worked as a Seaman on the Cunard Line & settled in Jersey City, NJ where he originally managed a Hotel. He later went into the Real Estate business as a broker obtaining several properties in Southern NJ, Jersey City and Branchport, NY. He also became a well respected Judge in Jersey City, NJ. His sons Frank & William were proprietors of the Dalton Hotel in Long Branch, NJ.

Obituary – Robert J. Dalton
At midnight last night, Justice of the Peace Robert J. Dalton, died suddenly at the residence of his daughter, on Atlantic Street. “Judge” Dalton, as he was familiarly known, was a great favorite.
He was an Englishman and came to this Country many years ago. Being a shrewd man of business, he quickly began to amass property and was counted wealthy. He was a Justice of the Peace in old Jersey City for many years. He was also a real estate and note broker. He had much property in this City and at Branchport, N.Y. His disease was Heart failure. Yesterday he was in apparent good health and his death was unexpected. He was a widower and leaves three sons and two daughters, the youngest of whom was recently married.
