He received a B.A. and an M.A. from Defiance College in 1907 and 1908, respectively. He taught mathematics at Defiance College from 1908-1917, also teaching a spring term at the University of Chicago between 1905 and 1911. He was ordained a minister in the Christian Church (now UCC) in 1908. In 1911, he received an honorary doctorate of literature from Elon College in North Carolina. He was named acting president of Defiance College in 1917. He was confirmed as president of the college in 1918 and remained in office until 1931 when he retired. He was employed by an insurance firm from 1931-1941, and appointed in 1942 as a statistician for the Department of Insurance for the state of Ohio, from which he retired in 1960.
