The Attica News" – Thursday, September 7, 1899

About 11 o'clock on Sunday [Sept. 3, 1899] morning occurred the death of Mrs. Pauline Briem, wife of Charles F. Briem, at her home on East Main street. Mrs. Briem had been ill for about six weeks but her condition was not considered alarming until two days previous to her decease, when it became apparent that she was suffering from cancer of the stomach. …

She was a woman much respected and well liked, and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. Mrs. Briem was nearly 54 years of age, having been born in New Germany, Canada, in September 1845 (her stone says 1846) After her marriage to Mr. Briem, which occurred 38 years ago, she resided for a time in Buffalo, and nineteen years ago the family came to Attica. Besides her husband she is survived by six children, two sons and four daughters. The children are: Mrs. Charles Post of Binghamton, Mrs. Otto Ostertag, of East avenue and Misses Mary and Perpetua, Frank and Carlie Briem who resided at home. She also leaves one brother, John Hug of Buffalo.

The funeral services were held at St. Vincent's church on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock and were largely attended. Mass was said by Rev. Father Gardiner and the sermon was delivered by a former pastor, Rev. Father Wilbur of Perry. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, contributed by her many friends, and which attested to their love and esteem for the deceased. The interment was in the cemetery on Exchange St.
