Dewey Lee Carter was born on March 28, 1922 in Spiro, Oklahoma. His parents and 7 siblings moved to the Kansas City, MO., area when he was 5 years old. Dewey had to quit school in his early teens to help support his family. At the age of 18 he started working at Armco Steel Corporation on the east side of Kansas City, MO, which held his job while he was in the Army during World War II. He retired in December of 1976, from Armco Steel after being injured on the job in May, 1976. He served his country as a Technical Sergeant in the US Army during World War II in the Philippines and Fiji Islands where he received the Bronze Star Medal during the Northern Solomon's Campaign in the Pacific Theater. On January 12, 1943 he married Alta Louise Greathouse in Kansas City, Mo, and they were married 51 years until her passing on September 7, 1994. Dewey enjoyed coon hunting and was a founding member and past President of the Johnson County Coon Hunters Association of Holden, MO.
