Capt. John Shaw, Jr. was the second son of John Shaw (Northern Ireland immigrant to S. C.) and eldest son in his father's second marriage. He was the first college graduate and did so in that first native-born American generation (U. of S. C. class of 1809). In leadership, John became a Captain in the War of 1812. He was Ruling Elder in Salem Black River Presbyterian Church for 12 years. And, he served in the S. C. House of Representatives, 1828-29, from Claremont District.

He and Susan had 8 children: John Gamble Shaw (1814-1814); Sarah Warburton Shaw (1815-?) m. David Kennedy & they in Wilcox Co., Alabama by 1836; Sam R. Shaw (1818-1818); "Belle" Isabella B. Shaw (b. about 1823) & m. John Gambier Scull, M. D. & they were in Wilcox Co. Alabama; Lillis Susannah Shaw (1825-1826); AgnesEliza Shaw (1827-1843, age 16); John Calvin Shaw (1830-1872); Susannah Gamble Shaw (1830-1848) m. Robert Manton English in 1847 & died 6 mo. later & all of his children by second wife. Susannah & her twin brother, John Calvin Shaw were raised by their Aunt Eliza J. Shaw Bradley because both of their parents died when they were very young (source Miss Ella McCutchen).

Where is his daughter, Isabelle? By Jan. 1845, Power of Attorney, Monroe Co., Alabama to Henry A. DuBose & notes "coming from my father's estate" (Register of Deeds document in the Sumter County, S. C., conveyance book M, items 150 & 151, concerning the estate of this Capt. John Shaw).
