Mabel Newman Jennings, 82, of Austinville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010.

She was born Dec. 20, 1927, in Carroll County, the daughter of the late Montie B. and Ethel Smythers Newman.

She taught elementary school in Gladeville and Woodlawn for many years and was a life member of the Laurel Rescue Squad and a member of Pleasant View Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin Jennings; and a granddaughter, Melissa J. Shockley.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Damon Branch of Austinville; one son and daughter-in-law, Berlin Michael and Reida Jennings of Galax; three grandchildren and spouses, Cary and Shannon Pack, Jim Shockley and Damon Branch Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Phillip Pack, Jacob Pack, Brady Pack and Elijah Pack; three sisters, Dell Mabe of Woodlawn, Faye Davidson of Ridgeway, Va., and Mary Ann Griffin and husband Ray of Austinville; four brothers, Forest Newman and wife Virginia of Galax, Lake Newman and wife Lola of Woodlawn, Willard Newman of Woodlawn and Gene Newman of Independence; and a brother-in-law, Olis Jennings of Dublin.

A funeral was held Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Pleasant View Church with the Rev. Tracy Alley, the Rev. Charles Smythers and the Rev. Billy Dean officiating. Interment followed in the Pickett Cemetery.

The family received friends Thursday at the church.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville, was in charge of arrangements.
