Lila Counter, a former a resident of York for over 25 years, passed away March 19, 2003 at Limestone Health Facility in Athens, Ala.

She was born Jan. 22, 1907 in Oberlin, Kan. Lila attended Kansas State University and Emporia State Teachers College where she graduated in 1931. She later taught Home Ec. in Decatur County, Kan. and Waco/Benedict.

On Jan. 21, 1934 she was marriage to Theo R. Counter (Oberlin). They moved to York where Theo was owner and manager of York Milling Elevator. Later in life she was a housemother at Kansas University and Northwestern University.

Lila was a member of the York Presbyterian Church, P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter A, American Association of University Women, Daughters of the American Revolution Eastern Star, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was preceded in death by her husband Theo who died June 25, 1945, her parents and by five brothers and sister. Survivors include a son, a daughter, seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Athens, Alabama. Burial will be in Oberlin City Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the York Presbyterian Church.
