Samuel J. Boyer was born 8 September 1843 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Joshua and Susanna (Keller) Boyer. Samuel was a third generation descendant of the Revolutionary War veteran, George Phillip Boyer, who was born in Baden Germany in 1750, immigrated to America in 1770 and settled in the "Pennsylvania Dutch" area in Berks County, Pennsylvania.
When Samuel was a small boy, his family moved to Wauseon in Fulton County, Ohio. Samuel was a Civil War veteran and served with the 130th Ohio Regiment. After his wartime service he returned to Wauseon, where he met and married, on 22 January 1865, Lucinda Breeling, daughter of Peter and Mary Ann (Miller) Breeling.
Samuel and Lucinda moved to Herndon, Kansas in late 1870's and lived there until late 1880's when they came to Mills County, Iowa, where they remained until Samuel's death on 1 October 1912 at Glenwood, Iowa. Lucinda followed him in death on 18 February 1925. They are both buried in the family plot in Glenwood Cemetery.
Samuel and Lucinda had thirteen children: Charles Wesley, born 10 January 1866 at Wauseon, Ohio. He married Louise Elizabeth and had five children. He died in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1927; Janeta, born 2 September 1867 at Wauseon, Ohio. She married Herman Hesenberger and had five children. She died at McCook, Nebraska 28 March 1952; Ida Belle, born 21 July 1869 at Stryker, Ohio. She married Joseph Hesenberger and had five children. She died at McCook, Nebraska 15 February 1928; Halley born 21 May 1872 at Stryker, Ohio. She died 18 July 1877 at Delton, Ohio at the age of five years; Peter Mahlon, born 4 June 1873 at Delton, Ohio. He married Katie Burger and had four children. He died at Glenwood, Iowa 16 February 1945; Mary Ann born 21 August 1875 at Delton, Ohio. She married August Rathke and had four children. She died 3 July 1966 at Council Bluffs, Iowa; Lucinda Ellen born 2 November 1879 at Herndon, Kansas. She married Lafe Emerine and had four children. She died 11 November 1979 at Council Bluffs, Iowa; Arthur Legrange born 27 September 1881 at Herndon, Kansas. He married Myrtle Rooker and had six children. He died 25 August 1956 at Council Bluffs, Iowa; Oscar Bertram born 27 May 1883 at Herndon, Kansas. He died 1 June 1899 at Glenwood, Iowa at the age of sixteen; Samuel J., born 2 May 1885 at Herndon, Kansas. He married Amy K. Hurst and had three children. He died at Council Bluffs, Iowa on 23 November 1946. He was a lifelong resident of Glenwood,' Iowa; Walter Eric, born 26 August 1886 at Herndon, Kansas, died there 5 May 1887 at the age of eight months; Fred Herman born 21 April 1888 at Herndon, Kansas. He married Minnie Pauline Hurst and they had three children. He died 22 January 1946 at Council Bluffs, Iowa and Valda born 21 August 1890 at Herndon, Kansas and died the same day. The 1900 US Census shows Samuel Boyer living on a farm in Plattville, Mills County, IA with his wife Lucinda and three children: Arthur L, born in September, 1881, Samuel J., born in May, 1885, and Fredie H, born in April, 1888.

The 1910 US census shows Samuel's older son, Mahlon and his family, living next door in Plattville.
