Jack ran away from home when he was ten years old. He felt that he had been mistreated by his older brothers. He hopped a train to Sacramento, California. He met a farmer who gave him his first job herding sheep to Fair Oaks, California. The farmer took him in and kept in contact with his mother. He made Jack finish school. Occasionally he would go home to visit. He joined the Merchant Marines as a teenager. Jack was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Cooks, Bartenders and Dishwashers Union in Sacramento in the late 1930's. He re-enlisted July 11, 1942 in the Merchant Marines during WWII because he was too old to enlist in the armed services. He was a Chief Steward of numerous ships. In 1955 he retired due to a heart condition. He worked as a chef in San Francisco. In later years he worked as a Bartender at Ceasars Bar on Taylor and Eddy in San Francisco.
