Mrs. America Lair, aged 88 years, who was stricken with pneumonia last week, passed away Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Monmouth Hospital.
Mrs. Lair, who was known as "Grandma" to everyone in the community, had been in failing health for many months, due mainly to old age. Some time ago she fell and broke her hip, but she miraculously recovered from this accident. It was thought for a while she would recover from the attack of pneumonia, but it proved to be too much for her.
Mrs. Lair was an outstanding character of Alexis, having lived here and in Mercer County all her life. She was a generous person and derived a great lot of joy out of helping others and up until her confinement she was very active in home life and always took an unusual interest in all civic affairs.
She was born on a farm near Aledo on Sept. 23, 1855, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Canum. May 30, 1878 she was married to William Lair, to which union three children were born. One daughter and a son, Dr. M. T. Lair, preceded her in death. The third child, Mrs. Kate Leek of Milford, Canada, who has for many months been in Alexis caring for her mother, survives.
Funeral services will be held on Monday in the Alexis Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock, with Dr. David Brigham officiating. Burial will take place in the Aledo cemetery.
