Joseph W. Copeland was listed as "insane, idiot, maimed or bedridden, sick from fits" in the 1880 Census and appeared in the special "Idiot" Census for that same year that added the additional note that his 'fits' began at the age of 7.

Mariah was not his wife... she was his sister... appearing together as children in the 1880 census.
