James Calhoun Martin was born on February 2, 1809, in Madison Co, Kentucky.

His father, (John) Hudson Martin and Mother Lucy Hill; along with his eight siblings, moved to Howard Co. Missouri in 1839. His mother, Lucy, died in Warren Co. KY enroute to MO.

The Martin homestead in Howard Co. was near the Richard Gaines Crigler homestead.

James married Mariah L. Crigler on July 22, 1841, in Howard Co, Missouri. By 1858 James and Mariah were living in Glasgow, Howard Co. MO, where his father died in his home. By 1860, they had moved to Blackwater in Saline Co. They had 13 children in 20 years.

He died on January 19, 1883, in Blackwater, Saline Co, Missouri, at the age of 73, and was buried in Marshall Junction Cemetery.

In 2008, the memorial stone was moved from Marshall Junction Cemetery (unconfirmed location) to Bethlehem Cemetery at the behest of the Bethlehem Cemetery Board of Directors because the Marshall Junction Cemetery was not being maintained.
