Funeral services were held this (Wednesday) afternoon, October 18 at the Rock Branch community church for Bert Baker Ashley, 87, longtime Anthon resident, who died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
Rev. Merlin Davies officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery at Anthon under the direction of the Walter funeral home.
Marjorie Fey was the soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Max Flathers. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Fixel were in charge of the flowers.
Pallbearers were Fred Thompson, Clifton Renneker, Forrest Yockey, Joe O'Connell, George Jerman and Vester Hayworth.
Mr. Ashley, born July 27, 1874 at Hartsburg, Ill., settled on a farm in the Anthon area in 1890 and lived there the rest of his life. He married Austa Drake on March 6, 1900. She died in 1916.
Mr. Ashley was a director of the Wolf Creek township school and a trustee of the township.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Daniel Huffine of Columbia Falls, Mont., Mrs. Maxine Conrad of Centralia, Wash., and Mrs. Emmert Reinking of Kingsley; two sons, Eldon of Anthon and Frank of Correctionville; a brother, Charles of Anthon; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
