GRACE HELGENS DIED FRIDAY, SERVICES AT WAYNE CHURCH
Final services were conducted Tuesday morning, July 31, at 10 a.m. at the Wayne Lutheran church for Grace Johanna Helgens who died Friday afternoon at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Helgens, after an extended illness. Interment was in the Wayne cemetery with Rev . F.H. Kehren officiating.
Born September 16, 1867 the daughter of Wilke and Elizabeth Hayen Zimmerman, she came to the US, from Hanover, Germany, 84 years ago.
She was married to Gerhard Zimmerman Feb. 27, 1889 and three children were born to the couple. Her husband died in September, 1894.
She remarried on July 2, 1900, to Harm Helgens. The couple, parents of three children, farmed in Wayne Township until her husband died Oct. 27, 1939.
A member of the Wayne Lutheran church, Mrs. Helgens was a charter member of the Ladies aid.
Survivors include four sons, Louis Helgens, Edward Helgens, and Herman Helgens, all of Monticello, and William J. Zimmerman of Amber; two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Anna) Siebels of Amber, and Mrs. Henry (Lizzie) Tobiason of Monticello; step-children, George and Rhinehart Helgens and Mrs. Mrs. Meta Zimmerman; brother, William G. Zimmerman and sisters, Mrs. Mary Toenjes and Mrs. William Siebels, all of Anamosa; 37 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her husband were one step son, two step daughters, one brother and three sisters.
Pallbearers were her sons, William J. Zimmerman, Herman Helgens, Louis Helgens, Edward Helgens, Carl Siebels and Henry Tobiason.
