Growing up he attended St. Matthews A.M.E. Church. He was a lifelong learner and graduated from Admiral King High School in 1967. He received a B.A. Degree, a Master's of Arts Degree from Bowling Green University, Bowling Green, OH, and a PH. D from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich. He was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
Dr. Blakely promoted the importance of a sound education in every aspect of his life. He has influenced the lives and minds of many.
Persistent, professional, and passionate, he began his career teaching at Hampton University in Virginia and ended as Director of Mass Communications at Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC.
He was an experienced traveler and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston Benjamin and Christine (nee Rouse) Blakely.
He is survived by his sons Preston M. Blakely, Lorain, OH and Kevin E. (Shonda) Blakely, Snellville, GA; grandchildren Prestys, Amari and Kevin Benjamin Blakely, and a host of cousins and close friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday May 21, 2010 from 7-9 pm at Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway Ave, Lorain OH. Services will be held at Greater St. Matthews A.M.E. Church 1909 W. 24th, Lorain, OH on Saturday May 22, 2010 at 11am. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.
