Rev. John Lee Taylor, one of the best known and highly regarded citizens of Henry County, and a prominent Baptist minister for many years, died Sunday at his home near Mayo in the Southwestern part of this county, aged 80 years, after a brief illness of pneumonia.
The funeral services took place yesterday from his old home.
Born in the same section of the county in which he died, and was laid to rest there in Mayo, Va. For nearly sixty years he had been in the active ministry of the Baptist church. More than half of the Baptist churches in the Blue Ridge Association were organized by this faithful minister. He belonged to a family of preachers, his father before him being a prominent minister and two of his brothers surviving him, are today are among the most outstanding of all the men in the Baptist ministry, Dr. J. J. Taylor of Jasper, Alabama, and Dr. S. F. Taylor of Liberty, Missouri.
The aged minister was also a Confederate Veteran, and for many years had taken an active part in the affairs of the veterans.
Among the relatives in Martinsville, Va., is a nephew, Hon. J. R. Taylor, Commonwealth's Attorney.

The Rev. John Lee Taylor, whose death occurred last Sunday morning at his home near Mayo, five miles south of Spencer,Va., was born in Mayo on January 30, 1845. Mr. Taylor, at the age of 16 years, enlisted in the Confederate Army as a member of Company H, 42nd Virginia Regiment.
In October 1864, he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Cedar Creek, and was held as a prisoner at Point Lookout, Maryland until June 1865, two months after the surrender.
After his marriage to Miss Roxie Ann Taylor in 1866, they went to Murfreesboro, Tenn, where Mr. Taylor entered the Union University for his college training. After four years of study he returned to Henry County, Va. where he taught in the county schools.
In 1874 Mr. Taylor was ordained a minister of the gospel and was employed by the Baptist State Mission Board. His first work was to organize and establish a Baptist church at Floyd Courthouse, Va.
It has been frequently said that his father, the Rev. Daniel G. Taylor, was the Founder of the Blue Ridge Association, and that his son, Rev. Mr. John Lee Taylor was the Preserver.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Roxie T. Taylor, and two(sic) sons, James D. Taylor of Charlotte; N.C., T. J. Taylor of Spencer, Va. and three daughters, Mrs. Zadok Bernard of Rocky Mount, N.C., Mrs. E. M. Adkins of Glad Springs; Mrs. Eugene Smith of Spencer, Va.
He is also survived by four brothers, Ref. Dr. S. F. Taylor of Columbus, Mo., Rev. Dr. J. J. Taylor of Jasper, Ala., Dr. T. J. Taylor of Leaksville, N.C., and one sister, Mrs. G. T. Angel of Spencer, Va.
The funeral was from Mayo Baptist Church, which church he joined at 18 years of age.
The flower bearers were grandchildren and great grandchildren, Mesdames Irene Brough, Paul Simpson, Ruben Taylor, Edgar Taylor, Carrie Schneider, Robt. E. Smith; Misses Nellie Smith, Doris Smith, Evelyn Smith; Messrs. Bernard Brough, Milton Taylor. source: Bruce Locke.
