He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Cpl Barnsdale trained as the team commander of a Royal Engineers Search Team, and was responsible for the detection of improvised explosive devices in areas deemed to be high risk. He was killed in an explosion while his team operated east of Gereshk in the Nahr-e Saraj (North) area of Helmand province.

Aged 24, from Tring, Hertfordshire. Cpl Barnsdale joined the Royal Engineers in September 2002. Following his basic combat engineer training, he completed his Class 2 Air Conditioning and Refrigeration trade training and served in Germany, Iraq and a previous tour in Afghanistan. He was described by his commanding officer as a first rate soldier and leader of men. Fun-loving and outgoing, he was an enthusiastic football player and sportsman. He also had a boundless passion for Queen's Park Rangers FC and carried his club flag everywhere he went.

Cpl Barnsdale leaves behind his mother Wendy, father Stephen, sister Vanessa, and girlfriend Helen McEvoy, along with other relatives and many friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on November 11, 2010 at St Peter & St Paul Church, Tring.
