Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 12th Veterans Reserve Corps. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He served as California's Lieutenant Governor from 1880 to 1883. When he died in Los Angeles in 1896, he was cremated, and his ashes were interred in Rosedale Cemetery without record; thus, their location is now unknown.
