son of Ernest Ackt, the tailor, was at Storms' Grocery, where he often assisted,
playing with other boys, chasing each other about, a piece of hickory nut he had
in his mouth, accidentally entered his windpipe. He was immediately in great
agony and in answer to an inquiry said he swallowed a hickory nut shell. Dr.
Badeau, who was hastily summoned, advised taking the sufferer to the Paterson
hospital. In the utmost haste he was conveyed to Waldwick, where a train was
just leaving, and soon reached Paterson, where a tracheotomy was performed, and
where, while waiting instruments from New York to attempt to remove the
obstruction, which had descended to one of the bronchial passages, the
unfortunate sufferer died the following day, Sunday, Dec. 15th.
The funeral took place from the residence of the afflicted parents on the
17th. Flowers, in a profusion seldom witnessed, testified to the grief and
sympathy of the community. Rev. E. Hughes preached the sermon and remarks were
made by Rev. J.V. Bodine. Interment at the Reformed church.
