John was born on Oct. 13, 1932, in Twin Falls to Dewey and Lena Squires. He was the youngest of four children.
John joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 and served his country during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he went on to earn an associate's degree from Boise Junior College and his bachelor's of accountancy degree from San Jose State University.
On Oct. 28, 1965, he married Alana Sharon Holwerda, daughter of Fred and Eleanor Holwerda of Mountain View, Calif. The two lived in Northern California where John worked as a controller for two large companies. Their daughter, Gina, was born on May 4, 1967, followed by their son, Will, on May 12, 1969.
The family moved to Idaho nearly 30 years ago. John spent the past several years working as an independent tax accountant and dabbling in the cow and sheep business. Those who knew him know how he loved to barter. A simple tax return could be had for a nice piece of horse tackle or a rope; a more complicated one might require some steak and lobster upon pickup.
He enjoyed being outdoors working on the family farm, had a soft heart when it came to animals, especially dogs, and he loved being a grandpa. John's friends and family will miss his warm smile, his playful sense of humor and his kindness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and his father-in-law.
He is survived by his wife Alana Squires of Marsing; his mother-in-law Eleanor Holwerda of Marsing; his daughter and son-in-law Gina and Gary Ferguson and grandsons Connor and Trevor Ferguson of Nampa; his son and daughter-in-law Will and Sherry Squires and granddaughter Maddie Squires of Nampa; a sister Dorothy Cutbirth of Emmett; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Flahiff Funeral Chapel in Homedale, followed by interment at the Marsing-Homedale Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to lunch at the Marsing Senior Center at noon Friday.
Memorial donations can be made to either the senior center or the Idaho Humane Society.
