He resided in Upshur County, West Virginia prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on October 19, 1942 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Sales clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24J #42-100253 took off from San Pancrazio, Italy on a bombing mission over Regensburg, Germany. After the bombing mission was completed B-24J #42-100253, for an unknown reason, crashed into B-24D #42-72847 causing both aircraft to crash in Germany during the war.
Clifton was "Killed In Action" in this crash.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
