He was born on August 19, 1938 in Burkville, Alabama in Lowndes County to the union of Mingo Bracy Sr. and Teresa (Williams) Bracy. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Canaan Hill Primitive Baptist Church. He graduated from Calhoun High School in Lowndes County in 1959 and soon afterward moved to Lorain, Ohio.
John was employed by the Ford Motor Company in Lorain for 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was the first African American representative of the UAW Local 425 in which he was a former Trustee.
Elder Bracy was a long time member and minister at the New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church of Lorain where he once served as a deacon. He also served as Pastor of Heartfelt Baptist Church in Cleveland OH before returning to New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to serving God, he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Lorene G. (Sutton) Bracy; six children: John Bracy Jr. (Cyndy) of Lorain, Brian K. Bracy (Michelle) of Lorain, Oh, Mark A. Bracy of Long Island, New York, Cheryl Bracy of Sandusky, Angela Bracy Heath of Alexandria, Virginia, Jacqueline (Elder Alfred) Gilchrist of Lorain; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild; mother-in-law, Helen Sutton of Lorain; sisters, Elizabeth Calhoun of Birmingham AL, Janie B. Jeter of Lorain, Mary Ann Ford of Burkville AL; brothers, Mingo Bracy Jr. of Burkville AL, Isaac Bracy of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
John was preceded in his death by his parents, Mingo & Teresa, a brother Nelson Bracy Sr., and a grandson, Alfred Gilchrist Jr.
Friends may call, Tuesday, August 31, 2010 from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon at New Bethel P. B. Church, 3880 Dayton Ave in Lorain. Pastor Tyrone Holley will officiate the service. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.
