George J. Spore, 84, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Hospice House of Ashland.

He was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Jeannette, Pa., to Bernard and Genevieve (Altman) Spore and lived most of his life in Ashland County.

He had been a carpenter for Paullin Construction, worked at Hess and Clark and retired in 1990 from the Ashland City Schools maintenance department. He was a 1943 graduate of Ashland High School and a 1950 graduate of Ashland College. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, 568th Squadron of the 390th Bomb Group as a waist gunner in a B-17 flying more than 26 missions. He was a member of American Legion Post 88 and the 390th Memorial Museum. He was an active member of St. Edward Catholic Church.

On Nov. 22, 1950, George married Kathryn Hilty, who survives.

Also surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Rose Spore of Akron; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Ken Boyer and Susan and Steve Wilder, all of Ashland; six grandchildren, Stephanie and Brian Lloyd, Sarah and Ryan Brockway, Melissa and Brennen Kyser, Allyson Wilder, William Boyer and Jennifer Wilder; and a great-granddaughter, Evelyn Brockway. He is also survived by two sisters, Shirley Sarsefield of Jeannette, Pa., and Barbara Rush of Ashland; two brothers, Bernard (Ila) Spore of Elyria and Charles (Mary Ellen) Spore of Houston, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Spore; and a brother-in-law, William Rush.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at St. Edward Catholic, 501 Cottage St., Ashland, with Father Rodney Kreidler officiating.

Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery where the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will present honors.

Friends may visit with the family 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

The family suggests contributions be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805; or Kidney Foundation, 2831 Prospect Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44115-2606.
