Alan Ayers, 84, passed away Thursday morning, April 16, 1998 at Anna Kaseman Hospital after a brief pneumonic illness.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia, of the home in Estancia, New Mexico. His daughter, Betty and husband, Mel Hochhalter of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; son, Jim and wife, Gayle of Anthony, Texas and daughter, Barbara Tatum of Denver, Colorado. He had eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Alan enjoyed life, family and many neighbors and friends. He recently ranched beef cattle, Appie and Paint Horses.

He was born and reared in the Estancia Valley and then went on to the University of Kansas at Lawrence where me met and then married Virginia Folks on September 29, 1934. The couple completed college during the thirties and Alan went to work as an Engineer for General Electric at Schenectady, New York where he distinguished himself as an Inventor and Developer. He was then hired by Oppenheimer and General Groves to work on the development of the Atomic Bomb. In January of 1946 he went to work at Sandia Base in Albuquerque and set up and staffed the test facility. In 1955 the family moved to Tijeras, NM where Alan busied himself with building projects and served as a Justice of the Peace. Shortly after that he turned to farming land located southwest of Estancia. He will be missed greatly by all his family, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 20, 1998 at the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary Chapel in Mountainair with Rev. Dave Blackwell of the Estancia United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Estancia Memorial Cemetery with Adam Aday, Jamie Ayers, Jeremy Ayers, Travis Tatum, Trent Tatum and John Mygatt serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob Artmar, Johnny Aday, Jess Doty, Gene Kamerzell, Raymond Sedillo, Dave Luckett, John Maygatt and Jim Bowden.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair, 847-2331.
