Private Kelly's true name was Edward Kelly, When Kelly enlisted into the U.S. Army on September 13, 1866, he used the first name of Patrick, with H as his middle intitial. He enlisted in New York, NY. At the time of his enlistment he was described as 25 yrs old, gray eyes, sandy hair, fair complexion and 5'5" tall. His listed civilian occupation was laborer.

In October 1866 Kelly was assigned to Company I, 7th U.S. Cavalry at Ft Riley KS. Company I was commanded by Capt Myles Keogh. His daily duties included clerk. On September 17, 1871, his enlistment expired, while stationed at Bagdad Ky.

Kelly re-enlisted for another five years with Company I. On June 10, 1873, Kelly deserted. He was captured four days later at St Paul MN. A general court martial sentenced him to three years confinement & a dishonorable discharge. His sentenced was suspended, & he was reinstated to Company I.

Kelly was killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn with Company I. After the battle most of Company I was found in area between Calhoun Ridge and Last Stand Hill. In 1881, all battlefield burials were re-buried in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill. Kelly was survived by his wife and two children.
