Private Griffin was born in Dingle County Ireland. He enlisted into the U.S. Army on October 16, 1872 at Toledo OH. Griffin was described as 24 yrs old, black eyes, dark hair, ruddy complexion & 5'9" tall. His civilian occupation was laborer.

On December 9, 1872, Griffin reported for duty at Charlotte NC & was assigned to Company C, 7th U.S. Cavalry. Company C was commanded by two time Medal of Honor recipient, Capt Tom Custer. Capt Custer was also the brother of LTC George Armstrong Custer. Griffin's daily duties were tailor & cook.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Griffin was originally assigned to the pack train at the rear of the column. But when the command was divided into three battalions, Griffin was returned to his company.

During the battle Company C was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Griffin was killed during the fighting. His body was never identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found in the area of Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
