Thomas Jefferson Roach, 77, who died November 25 at the home of his daughter at Spray, N.C., where he was undergoing treatment, was laid to rest the following day at the family cemetery near the old home, near Axton, Va.
Close friends of the family acted as pall bearers and flower bearers.
The deceased was a son of the late James D. and Matilda Roach of this county.
He was born in 1856 [sic] near Martinsville.
In 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Louise Elmira Foley of Patrick County, Va. by whom he is survived.
To this union were born 13 children, eight of whom survive, who are as follows: Benjamin, James M., Preston, Thomas J. Jr., and Mesdames J. R. Roach, Frank C. Jones, Lilburne T. Moore and Jesse Leonard.
One sister, Mrs. Christley Barker also remains.
Mr. Roach spent quite a number of years of his life in Patrick County, then moved later to Wythe County where he became chief carpenter for the Bertha Zine Mines at Bertha, Va. He also served as peace officer in that community. After living there for about 12 years he returned to his old home near Axton, Va. in this county, and helped to build or remodel a majority of the best homes in that vicinity.
He also owned and operated a small farm upon which he lived and spent the late years of his life. Wherever he went, he was highly regarded by all that knew him.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Hickson Roach of Reidsville, N.C. Cyril Davis, Durham, N.C., Mr. and Mrs. Keaton of Greensboro, N.C., Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kelly, Benj. and Henry Kelly, all of Vinton; James M. Roach of Glen Allen, W. Va., Leslie Fowlkes, War, W. Va., Mrs. Frank C. Jones and Miss Jaunita Moore, also of War, W. Va., Miss Pauline Roach of Martinsville, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Leonard and family of Spray, N.C., Mrs. Louise Reid, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd.
