AFFLECK.--After an illness of four years, Ann Maria, wife of John Smith Affleck, peacefully fell asleep on April 27, 1895. She was born in Port Richmond, Staten Island, December 2, 1817,and died in Brooklyn, New York, at the residence of her son-in-law, Richard S. Shafter, a class leader in James Methodist Episcopal Church, with whom she had made her home for a number of years. Mrs. Affleck was converted in the historic Willett Street Church, in New York city, in 1844, and from that time was an enviable example of devotion to Christ and loyalty to her church. October 21, 1838, she was married to John Smith Affleck. Her devotion to Christ increased her affection for her family, and there the influence of her deep religious life was most potent. The joy of her life seemed to be in prayer, for prayer and a God that heard prayer were to her not fancies, but realities. Among the very last tokens of recognition she left her family, when speech had failed and death was fast approaching, was the signal to have those about her dying bed pray with her. So she died as she had lived, a praying disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. A large family mourn their loss, while they rejoice in her triumph. Her husband, four children,, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren survive. The funeral services were conducted by Dr. W. D. Thompson, pastor of Central Methodist Episcopal Church of Brooklyn, and the writer. The interment took place at Cypress Hills Cemetery.
