Bruce enlisted into the US Army on October 29, 1864 in New York, NY. He was described, at the time of his enlistment, as 20 years old, blue eyes, brown hair, 5'7" with a fair complexion. His listed civilian occupation was laborer.

During the Civil War Bruce served with Company C, 7th US Infantry Regiment. His daily duties were listed as cook.

After the Civil War, Bruce reenlisted several times with the 6th US Infantry at posts in the Indian Territory & Gainsville Fl.

On May 1, 1876, he reenlisted for another five years. Bruce was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry at Ft Lincoln Dakota Territory.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Bruce was killed sometime during the fighting. After the battle most of Company F was found on or near Last Stand Hill.

Bruce's body was not identified. It was likley that his remains were first buried where they had been found on the battlefield.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
