Catherine was the first wife of Joseph Forrest E. Her older sister Elizabeth helped her sister with the six children, and carried on doing so after Catherine's death. Elizabeth became Joseph's 2nd wife and they had three more children.

Some confusion about the spelling of her maiden name Schmitt. Around 1920, the remaining Schmitt children changed the spelling to Schmidt.
