HARRIET W. CHILD, age 94 of East Smithfield died Sunday March 27, 1988 at the Troy Community Hospital after a lingering illness. She was born November 23, 1893 in Smithfield Township, the daughter of Rufus and Franc Bartholomew Child. A lifelong resident of the East Smithfield area, she was a graduate of Westchester Normal School, class of 1915. Miss Child graduated from Westchester State College and later took courses at Penn State, Cornell and Northwestern University. She was a teacher for 49 years at the East Smithfield Elementary School, which bears her name. She turned the first spade full of earth for the elementary school that is named for her 28 years ago. Last May a portrait of her was dedicated at a ceremony at the school. She taught first grade and in her early teaching years, also second grade. She was principal for many of the years she taught. Miss Child was a member of the East Smithfield Federated Church. She taught Sunday School for over 40 years and continued to be active in church, the Union Cemetery Association and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. She was also a member of the WCTU and was White Cross and Love Gift Chairman of the Federated Ladies until this year. She is survived by several cousins and a host of friends. Friends may call at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St., Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St., Athens on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral and committal service will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the East Smithfield Federated Church with the Rev. Marjorie Doriani pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the library of the Harriet W.
