Motion Picture director, assistant director and screenwriter; in the beginning of his career was assistant director to D.W. Griffith on his film "Birth of a Nation" (1915); also directed 50 films such as "High Sierra" (1941); "White Heat" (1949); "Battle Cry"(1955) and "The Naked and the Dead (1958); his last contribution was as screenwriter for "The Delta Factor"(1971).
