Former Hayfield Township Supervisor

SAEGERTOWN - Arthur "Grant" Giles, 78, 10318 Route 198, Saegertown, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at Meadville Medical Center. He was born in Ford City, Pa., Nov. 8, 1919, son of the late Sheridan A. and Rose Jane Tarr Giles. Mr. Giles had worked at the former Talon Inc. in Meadville before serving in the U.S. Air Force, 342nd Fighter Squadron, in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he moved to the Saegertown area and worked on a dairy farm with the late Clair Schlosser. They purchased Dressel Dairy, which they operated until Mr. Schlosser's death. In 1958, he was elected Hayfield Township supervisor and served for two terms. He then opened Giles Dairy Farm, which he operated until 1978. He then worked for Greenleaf Corp., retiring in 1985. During his retirement, he worked as maintenance supervisor at Colonial Crawford Park for three years. Mr. Giles was a member of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church, and was a former member of the church council. He was involved in developing the educational building there. He was a charter member of the Saegertown Sewer Authority, a 50-year member of the Hayfield Grange, a member of the Saegertown American Legion Post 205 and Masonic Lodge 473 F & AM, Scottish rite. He was a life member of the Saegertown Sportsman Club and a social member of the Saegertown Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Kon-yought Kickers. He also helped form the Western Wheelers square dance group. Mr. Giles was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy R. Schlosser Giles, on June 11, 1988. They were married Dec. 2, 1942. He was also preceded in death by a brother, LaRue M. Giles; and a grandson. He is survived by a son, Corey Giles of Saegertown and his wife, Donna; a daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Carol) Norton of Saegertown; five grandchildren, Dale Norton, Brian Norton, Darren Giles, Laura Norton and Kimberly Giles; two sisters, Mrs. Walter (LuAnna) Hart of Meadville and Mrs. James (Sara) Corey of Linesville; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Hunter Funeral Home, 330 Broad St., Saegertown, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. An American Legion service will be held there at 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service at 8 p.m. A service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Gretchen Crantz, pastor of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Saegertown Cemetery, Hayfield Township.
