The Herald Journal, RICHMOND, Utah -- Shirley Mae Higginson Winn, 69, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2005, in the Sunshine Terrace after a long two-year battle with Alzheimer's. She was born on May 3, 1935, in Smithfield, Utah, the middle daughter of Grant Card and Geneva Weeks Higginson. She married Wayne Stone Winn on March 8, 1952, in Preston, Idaho. They were later sealed for time and all eternity on May 27, 1957, in the Logan LDS Temple. After Shirley and Wayne married, they lived in San Diego; Salt Lake City; Price, Utah; Cedar City, Utah; Beaver, Utah; Sunset, Utah; and North Ogden, Utah, making their final home in Richmond. Shirley was born at the end of the Great Depression. Soon after Shirley's birth her family moved to Bancroft, Idaho, to run the Higginson family farm. Her family then moved back to Smithfield, Utah, when she was 6 years old. Shirley was a hard worker. She started working by her father's side at a very early age, where she drove the derrick horse, thinned sugar beets, picked up potatoes, weeded the family's large vegetable garden, cleaned chicken coops, picked raspberries and helped her mom clean the house. Shirley had a strong testimony and gave many hours of service to those in need. She loved genealogy and spent extensive hours working on the family history for the Higginson/Weeks family and the Winn/Stone family. Before Alzheimer's completely took her memory away, she wrote her life history, leaving behind a written legacy of many accomplishments, which at this time is cherished by the loved ones she has left behind. Shirley was an accomplished artist, seamstress, homemaker, teacher and genealogist. She touched many lives. She was a foster mother for several years to 36 foster children from birth to 16 years of age, while living in Ogden. Her church service included working in the Primary, MIA, Relief Society president, ward chorister and singing with the ward choir. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with her husband camping and fishing. She also enjoyed working alongside her husband in their yard and garden, and she loved watching and playing with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren over the years. She is survived by her husband, Wayne of Richmond; her children, David (Crissy) Winn of South Jordan, Utah, and Teresa (Quinn) McKnight of Smithfield, Utah; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Geneva Higginson; and a son, Daryl. Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, April 11, in the Richmond 4th Ward chapel, 150 S. 100 East in Richmond, with Bishop Wayne Henderson conducting. Interment will be in the Richmond Cemetery.
