BIG SANDY - Donald E. Bakke, 76, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at a Big Sandy hospital of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Christ Lutheran Church in Big Sandy with the Rev. Rich Jespersen officiating. Burial with Military honors will follow at the Big Sandy Cemetery.
Bakke was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Big Sandy, to Martin and Olga Louise Marie (Kulbeck) Bakke. He graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. of 1943 to Jan. 24, 1946. He fought in the South Pacific with the 201th Anti Aircraft Automatic Weapons, BN.
On Nov. 25, 1948, he married Maudie Beck of Box Elder, in Havre. He was employed for the Farmers Union and as a school bus driver. In 1956, he helped build the new high school and also delivered freight from the train depot. He was employed for Pratt & Svenn service station in 1958. In 1968 he became a rural letter carrier. He delivered mail out on the prairie west of town for 26 years until his retirement in January of 1995.
He enjoyed fishing, attending dances, playing cards and cribbage and cutting and polishing rocks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Maudie and a brother, Victor.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Silvan of Big Sandy; a son, Calvin Bakke of Portland, Oregon; a sister, Margaret Jordan of Great Falls; a brother, LaVerne Bakke of Georgia; and five grandchildren.
