family tradition says that James S. Garrett was disowned by his father when he married Elizabeth Sims. After the birth of their first 3 children James & Elizabeth moved their family from Culpeper Co., VA to Rockingham Co., NC. In 1843 James & Elizabeth again moved their family to Johnson Co., MO, very close to the Henry Co., MO line. 3 of their children stayed in the NC/VA border area Jarrett B., William S., and Mary Ann Eliza. Sarah stayed a while but moved to Knox Co., TN.

Some of the Garrett's in and around Alamance County, NC think that James S. Garrett's father is Henry Garrett #76366233 and step mother Margaret Clark Garrett #116182505. (DNA results have proven this true)

In a letter to James Price Garrett from his Uncle Powhattan Green 'Poet' Garrett, he states that his Grandmother was Sarah Starling (1st wife of Henry Garrett) and that she died in NC, and was buried on the bank of Matrimony Creek in Rockingham County, NC near the state line with Virginia.
