Marvin Winfrey, 79 01/06/1931 10/10/2010

Marvin Dean Winfrey, 79, passed away unexpectedly Oct. 10, 2010, from a massive heart attack.

Marvin was born Jan. 6, 1931, in a farmhouse just outside of Trenton, Mo. He survived a serious illness as a youngster and went on to graduate from Trenton Senior High School and from Chillicothe Business College with an associate's degree. He then served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a mechanic during the Korean War. After his service time was over, he relocated to the West Coast and settled in Portland, where he started working for the U.S. Postal Service.

Marvin married Arlene Swartwout in Vancouver in 1965. They soon settled in Southeast Portland, where they remained happily ever since. They had a son, Alan, born in 1972. Marvin went on to work for the USPS in Portland until his retirement in 1989. Marvin loved his job as a letter carrier and in parcel post, and never wanted to take a job that would leave him in an office all day. He loved seeing and visiting with the people in his route area. Weeks before his passing, he would still dream at night about his days in the post office. Marvin was a very different character. He loved riding motorcycles as a young man, but stopped when he had a family and decided it was too dangerous. He had a great love for the outdoors, fishing, camping, etc. but his real hobby was tinkering around on stuff in his basement. He loved to fix things and build things, especially for other people. In later years, he loved to relax in his easy chair and contemplate things. He and Arlene developed a real love for the Oregon coast, and spent a lot of time there. He also enjoyed doing odds and ends at his beloved Turning Point Church in Milwaukie. It's not surprising the Lord chose to take him home while he was at the church. Marvin was a beloved father, grandpa, and husband who will be missed by all who knew him. The love he showed us, especially as he advanced in years, will be cherished forever.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; and by his sister, Dorthea Leona, who passed away as a child in 1931. Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Arlene; daughter, Gayle Anderson; son, Alan Winfrey; daughter-in-law, Alicia Winfrey; grandchildren, Addie, Gracie, Henry, and Tatum Winfrey; sister, Lois Gene Smith; and nieces, Connie Weatherfield, Charla Powell, and Brenda Hof.

Donations to the Oregon Food Bank or to the Missions program at Turning Point Church in Milwaukie would be greatly appreciated.
