Raleigh Albert Sandy, Sr., 100, of Blacksburg, died Friday, November 28, 2008. He was born October 17, 1908 in Rockingham County, Va. His parents were Lucie Tutwiler Sandy and T. G. Sandy . He is survived by his wife of seventy years, Judith Showalter Sandy, He is also survived by two sons, Raleigh A. Sandy, Jr. and wife, Patsy, of Centerville, Ohio and W. Tilman Sandy and wife, Betty Jo, of Williamsburg, Va.; and two daughters, Frances Elizabeth Umberger and husband, Fred, of Christiansburg and Mary Catherine Karatzie and husband, Vagelli, of Athens, Greece. He is also survived by the following grandchildren, Sadie Umberger Tedder, Jung Min Collins, Tracy Reeves, Raleigh A. Sandy , III, Steven Sandy , Kim Petrie, Teri Karoack, Alkistic Karatzie and Taso Karatzie; and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Wilda Kaylor and Margaret Sayers; and many nieces and nephews. He received a B.S. degree and an M.S. degree from VPI. While there he became a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Zeta honorary societies. He was an agricultural agent in Wythe County before coming to VPI as a professor in the Dairy Science Department. He served as a scout leader of BSA troop 44. He was a long standing member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church and served as their treasurer for many years. A memorial service will held Monday, December 1, 2008 at 4 p.m. in the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, with Pastor Gary Schroeder officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials could be made to Warm Hearth Foundation Endowment, 2603 Warm Hearth Drive, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
