J.C. Sossoman, veteran, funeral director, and leader in his community, will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Many called him friend, and those whose lives he touched were inspired by his life of dedication and hard work.

J.C. was born in Midland, North Carolina, son of Dr. John Calvin Sossoman and Lola Carol Hamilton Sossoman. He had one sister, Sara (the late Mrs. Richard Todderud).

J.C. Sossoman began to prove himself early in life when he served in the U.S. Army. He received the bronze star medal, and at age 90 was still involved in veterans' meetings and activities. He had served in Europe and in the Phillipines during World War II.

He attended Cinncinnati College of Mortuary Science and the John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science in Tennessee. Before establishing Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton, NC, he had worked at Vogler Funeral Home in Winston-Salem, NC and Wells Funeral Home in Canton, NC. His devotion to funeral service earned him recognition and honors with his peers. His dedication to his own craft made Sossoman Funeral Home the respected service it is today. There were times, over the years, when a casket went into the ground and no money (or precious little) went into his pocket. But his willingness to serve anyone, regardless of means, made him a well-liked and respected man.

Mr. Sossoman was a wholehearted supporter of his community and served in many ways. He brought ambulance service to his town, rushing when called in "The Green Hornet", a fully equiped ambulance. He was instrumental in starting the Burke County Rescue Squad as the need for emergency service grew.

J.C. was a member of Masonic Ledge #217,and was a Shriner in an organization which helps children receive hospital care. He was a member and past president of the Lions Club and had recently been recognized for 60 years' service to the blind. To detail all the many ways this man had served others during his 90 years on Earth would require much more space than a web page provides.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Smaro Black Sossoman, two sons, and a daughter. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His funeral was held at his beloved First Methodist Church, attended by family and a large number of friends. Graveside rites were held with full military honors, as he wished, for he himself always honored his country and his fellow veterans.
