He was born March 4, 1920 in Fisher, the son of Edward Alonzo and Nellie Grace Hanner Bayler. He married Louise K. Taroff on June 4, 1939 in Covington, Indiana. She survives.
Other survivors include four sons, James Harper, Rantoul; Jerry Bayler, Urbana and Bub Bayler and Lyle Eugene "Oscar" Bayler Jr., both of Fisher; two daughters, Linda Bullock, Danville and Carol Hennigh, Paxton; two sisters, Betty Torrence, Little Rock, Arkansas and Flossie Arnold, Urbana; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Four brothers and nine sisters preceded him in death.
