Funeral of Rev. Krauth, Vice Provost of the University
The funeral of Rev. Charles Porterfield Krauth, D. D., Vice Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, took place at noon yesterday, services being held in St. John's Lutheran Church, Fifteenth street below Poplar. The sacred edifice was thronged. The interior was draped in mourning, and a cross of white roses and immortelles was placed in the pulpit directly in front of the casket. Among those present were the trustees, faculty and students of the University, the latter numbering one hundred and fifty: the directors, faculty and students of the Lutheran Theological Seminary and a large number of different denominations.
The services were short, but impressive, were conducted in English and German. The scriptures were read by Rev. D. Sadtler, of Muhlenberg College, and prayer was offered by Rev. G. F. Krotel, of Trinity Church, New York; Rev. H. Graham, of the Immanuel Church; Rev. Dr. Sides, of Broad and Arch streets. The English address was made by Rev. C. W. Schaeffer, and the German address by Rev. Dr. Mann. The services being over, the cortege proceeded to Laurel Hill Cemetery, where the services were conducted by Rev. Dr. B. M. Schumacker. The pall bearers were Dr. H. H. Furness, Wharton Barker, Prof. Kendall, Prof. Jackson, Thomas H. Lane, of Pittsburg, J. R. Shyrock, Henry Beats and Reuben B. Miller."
