David and Elizabeth were living in Washington Township at the time of the 1850 census, probably on the farm that he was bequeathed in his father's will, that is, on the north side of Section 28's Northwest Quarter, about two miles northeast of the village of New Washington. (David's brother, Samuel Montgomery, received the south side of this quarter in the same will.) From the dating of land transfers, it appears that David and Elizabeth moved their family to Pike County, Illinois about 1865, shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War, where he settled on a farm near Chambersburg, Illinois.
The 1870 census for Fairmount Township, Pike County, shows David and Elizabeth living with daughter Julia and son, Martin, and a Kentucky born farmer, William S. Taylor, who was Julia's first husband. David was listed as the owner of land valued at $2,500 and personal property valued at $600. David died on June 5, 1880 at the farm near Chambersburg. He was buried in Brown Cemetery, Chambersburg, Pike County, Illinois. His widow, Elizabeth, is shown in the 1880 census for Chambersburg Township, living with daughter Julia and her second husband, Joseph Patton. The family also includes granddaughter, Elizabeth Taylor and grandson, William Taylor. Joseph Patton, married daughter Julia in 1878 after her first husband, William S. Taylor, had died of measles in 1875. Widow Elizabeth Troutman Montgomery died on May 29, 1889, and her burial place, like her husband's, is Brown Cemetery, Chambersburg, Pike County, Illinois.
David Montgomery is not listed in the 1880 census, having died just days before it was taken. He is, however, listed in the 1880 Mortality Index for Pike County Illinois. It states that his father, William Montgomery, was born in Maryland, and his mother, Mary Johnston, was born in Ireland. David and his brother James were the only children or William Montgomery and Mary Johnston to live to 1880. The census records for both children agree on the birthplace of their parents.
