The last of the Dabneys at Aldingham, he sold it to Harlan Howard in 1875. Aldingham was begun four generations earlier by William Dabney in 1760. On April 23rd, 1861, Charles enlisted in Company C of the 15th Virginia Infantry. Company C was the newly formed Patrick Henry Rifles, led by Captain Dabney. The winter of 1862 found them encamped on the Peninsula. The Captain wrote this in the muster roll:

"This company has remained in winter quarters at Youngs Mill in Warwick County since the last muster. The health has been wretched and the deaths from disease deplorable."

A successful planter and lawyer, he sought a judgeship and served the community as commissioner.
