Estelle "Betty" Duffy is my grandmother. She was born in Wabash, Indiana on 2 March 1902, although various records make her a bit younger. Her parents are Frank Hall -- who later began spelling his name "Hale" -- and Joanna Bidwell, both of Indiana.

Betty married Ernest Vane Kromer on 26 July 1919 in St. Joseph, Michigan. They lived with Ernest's parents and in June 1920 had a son, Eugene Vernon Kromer. Betty and Ernest divorced on 24 December 1921.

On 17 September 1923, in St. Joseph, Michigan, Betty married Adrian Thomas "Tom" Carey, my grandfather. On 27 July 1924 they had a son, Robert Thomas Carey, my father, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, where the Carey family lived. Soon Tom and Betty were living in Elkhart, Indiana and stayed there until they separated in 1936. Their divorce was final on 23 February 1937.

Sometime between April 1940 and June 1943 Betty married John Russell "Russ" Duffy. She had been living in Port Jervis, New Jersey where the Duffy family lived, and they likely met there. During World War II, however, Russ was stationed in North Carolina, and it was there in Guilford, NC, that their son, also John Russell "Jack" Duffy was born on 25 May 1945.

Toward the end of her life, Betty moved back to her Midwest home and lived in Dowagiac, Michigan. She'd had three husbands and one son by each of them. Amazingly, she outlived all three husbands and all three sons. She died 7 January 1992 and is buried in Silverbrook Cemetery. (Biography by M. Carey, 4 Nov 2014)
