Sonny is one of 9 children of James Hancock and Alice Jean "Lollie" Williams Hancock. He married Zylpha Eaton. Their children are Eugene Sully ("Gene") Hancock, Gary William ("Bill") Hancock, and Kathleen Hancock Lupher. At the time of his burial, this cemetery was known as Sunnyside Memorial Park and Mausoleum.

Sonny's death certificate and grave marker show birth year as 1893. Due to discrepancy with date of older brother DuVal (who died at 7 months), consensus is that Sonny almost certainly was born in 1894, as infant DuVal's marker is more likely to be accurate (having been placed by his parents). The "family lore" according to Sonny's son Gene is that James & Lollie wanted to have another child immediately after DuVal died. This would make sense as Sonny's would be born 10 months after DuVal died, if Sonny was born in 1894.
